When Pesky Things Catch Up With You
When Pesky Things Catch Up With You by Debra H. Goldstein
I tend to overbook my calendar. It normally works out because my mind remembers each of the things scheduled for a given day. In fact, it’s often like I have a photographic memory for the activities on my calendar and, if I don’t, a quick glance refreshes my recollection.
That’s true except for certain random things where I have my assignment way in advance and the task necessitates addressing something days before whatever it is pops up on my calendar. The two things that most often fall through the cracks is writing this blog every other month for The Stilleto Gang and posting my book cover during my Writers Who Kill week. It’s almost like I have a mental block which results in me scrambling at last minute.
Why? I don’t know. I had no problem posting on time for The Stiletto Gang when I was responsible for one blog a month. Do you ever have a regular task that falls through the cracks, only for you to rescue it at last moment?
Keeping in mind that pesky things sometimes need to be caught up, here’s my most recent book cover that I wasn’t timely with on Writers Who Kill. At least, I wrote this blog on time.

I think it’s easier to remember every month than every other month. Anyway, always good to read your posts!
Thank you, Saralyn. This one, as you can see, was my reminder … and I came through :).
Debra, I’d be lost without my calendar, but I’m finding that things are definitely falling through the cracks lately. I always prided myself on being able to juggle 17 things at once. After all, I’m a woman! We know how to multitask. Now, though, I’m down to about 7 rather than 17. Age gets all of us!
It is the truth. Somehow, I’m sure you are at 16 at the worst :).
I have a reminder system set up in my calendar. Otherwise, I’d be lost. And I also try to schedule a couple of months in advance. But then I can’t remember if I did that, so I have to check when my reminder comes up!
I carefully identify everything on a system, too. The problem is these “off” things don’t always get noticed in a timely manner. You are a better tracker. Something, I need to improve on.
I have to check my calendar a couple of times every day and glance at my to-do spreadsheet. I don’t think I’ve ever forgotten anything, but I’ve come close. I used to be able to multitask when I was teaching, and nothing fell through the cracks. My dad was an on-time taskmaster, and I still feel him looking over my shoulder.
If you forget anything, Debra, don’t worry. We will certainly understand.
Luckily, it doesn’t happen too often.
Debra, I so feel your pain. How people keep their schedules on their phones is beyond me. My calendar sits in front of me. I’m known to circle and X as I go along. Yes, pesky things, indeed!
I’m also a daily to-do list writer so I can check off things… and am known to send myself an email the night before for important things to do first.
“…my mind remembers each of the things scheduled for a given day.”
I am in awe.
