My Traveling Book
My Traveling Book

Tired of sweltering heat and sticky summer humidity? If you’re looking for the perfect escape, head to the Pacific Northwest.
Summer in the San Juan Islands is nothing short of magical. Since moving here, we haven’t needed air conditioning. We simply open the windows and let the cool marine breeze drift through the condo. Add whales gliding through nearby waterways, miles of scenic hiking trails, charming waterfront villages, and ferries that make island-hopping an adventure, and you’ve got the perfect summer destination.
Of course, no trip is complete without a good book.
Settings have always been one of my favorite parts of writing mysteries, and my third Kate Caraway Animal-Rights Mystery, Eagle Crossing, is set on beautiful Lopez Island. If you’re planning a visit, bring a copy along—or stop by Watermark Book Company before catching the ferry and pick one up. As you follow the mystery, you’ll also discover many of the island’s most memorable places.
Visit Iceberg Point, where lucky visitors may spot orcas. Wander the secluded shores of Blackie Brady Memorial Park. Collect beach treasures at Agate Beach County Park. Hike to breathtaking Watmough Bay, or spread out a picnic at Spencer Spit State Park while watching sailboats drift by.
Because Eagle Crossing centers on an animal rehabilitation facility, you can also visit two of Lopez Island’s most unique attractions: the Heaven on Earth Animal Retirement Sanctuary and the delightfully named Women Who Stare at Goats Collective.
Who says a mystery can’t double as a travel guide? Pack Eagle Crossing in your suitcase, and let the story lead you to one of the Pacific Northwest’s most enchanting islands.

Oh my gosh, my daughter flew her dad and me to the San Juan Islands years ago as a special treat when we visited her in Seattle. Fabulous Travel Book, Kathleen, and you animal rights mystery series sounds intriguing. Question: is it graphic?
No, it’s not graphic at all. It’s a heartwarming mystery. No animals were harmed, but a lot were saved.
Nice! Thanks for that, Kathleen.
Sounds like you’re living in a heavenly place, Kathleen.
Close, Lois, very close.
Kathleen – I’ve never been to the San Juan Islands, but now I want to go. 🙂 And can’t wait to read Eagle Crossing…
Mary Lee, did I mention our resident orca whales?
Another reason to visit! 🙂
Lovely post! I’m a Kate Carraway fan, because, like me, she loves animals, mysteries, and baseball!
